When Should I Apply Fertilizer to My Lawn?

Fertilizer is used to amend the soil that your plants inhabit. When the nutrient balance isn’t adequate, your plants suffer.

Making sure that your plants have everything they need is a major part of the struggle. It is also important to know when to treat your lawn.

Every yard is different and as you travel across different regions, the growing environment can change drastically. With a little bit of research, you can find the perfect fertilizer for your yard to keep it lush and healthy. Continue reading the article below to learn more about applying fertilizer to your lawn.

Types Of Fertilizers

There are both liquid and granular fertilizers and typically, they contain some balance of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and sometimes other nutrients. Each type is absorbed differently: liquids are absorbed readily by the root system and soil whereas granular fertilizers take more time to break down and become available to plants.

If your plants need a quick jolt, liquid fertilizer might be the way to go. Make sure that the dosage is just right because liquid fertilizers are almost impossible to remove once applied. Go with granular if you are looking for long-term feeding and soil correction. Again, you don’t want to over-fertilize and burn your yard, but if you happen to spill a pile of granular fertilizer on the lawn, it can be scooped up for the most part.

Warm Season Grasses

Warm-season grasses flourish in the spring and summer, as the name would suggest. Because of this, it is important to fertilize your lawn in the fall. Give your tour plants an opportunity to bulk up during the off-season and you will see much healthier growth come the spring

Cool Season Grasses

Cool-season grasses flourish in the cooler months of the year and should be fertilized in the springtime. This will give them the warm, wet months to take in their nutrients and prepare them for a cool dry season. Understanding the biome you’re living in and the plants that you keep will go a long way toward caring for them.

Other Applications

In between treatments, it is important to stay vigilant. Keep a watchful eye for various pests and weeds, as they can do damage to your lawn. In between fertilizer treatments, be sure to rid your lawn of any juice or weeds so that you aren’t feeding them a good meal when you fertilize. Fertilizer alone isn’t enough; you want to nourish your plants but also protect them from nutrient-stealing weeds and parasites. For an all-in-one solution, they do offer fertilizers with herbicides mixed in.

Treat Your Lawn On Time

Fertilizer composition and timing are everything when it comes to obtaining that golf course lawn. Maintaining a healthy lawn needs everything that your pet would: proper checkups, nourishment, treatment from parasites and disease, and attention. Watch for weeds and pay special attention to dry or discolored patches. If you treat your lawn well, it will be healthy and green all season long.
